Something Greater

Friend, Stranger & Confidant,

What a bizarre and beautiful phenomenon this friendship has become. I know you weren’t expecting it. Frankly, I wasn’t either. But here we are. Learning how to trust one another… even when we don’t want to.

As I’m sure you’ve realized by now, I need to know who you are. And more importantly, you need to know who you are. When you observe the world around you, or even look deep enough within yourself, it’s apparent that most people don’t know who they are meant to be. They can’t define their purpose. They have no idea why they are in this world. They have no identity. No foundation. No stability. Despite this, they—you—me—we all share the same longing for something beyond this life. Something Greater than ourselves.

Before you close yourself off to this conversation, let me remind you of who I am. First and foremost, I am your friend. I am a non-judgmental, unconditionally loyal, loving, steadfast, and faithful friend. I did not come into your life to demean you, or intentionally upset you. That said, please don’t turn me away for simply asking you a question.

Everyone’s heard of God. Everyone’s been either annoyed or condemned by a hypocritical religious institution that claims to be anointed in a law of love. Everyone’s listened to a song that makes light of heaven and hell. Our culture is riddled with the concept of a power—or a being—that is greater than ourselves, regardless of whether or not we individually buy into it. So, that begs the question:

What do you believe?

What, or who, do you accept as the ultimate source of truth in your life?

Is that truth relative?

Does it fluctuate with the tide?

Change by the day?

If you died tomorrow, do you believe your spirit would go somewhere?

Would you altogether cease to exist?

Is your life like an exhale in the cold winter air? Here this moment, and gone the next?

Or, does it span across a borderless eternity unbound by the construct of time?

Do you profess to the masses to believe in heaven, but in reality you’re only riddled with doubt?

Whatever your answers to these questions are, as your friend, I’ll meet you where you’re at. Without judgement. But I need to know where you stand. So, together, let’s take a moment and acknowledge your thoughts. And while we do, don’t allow your mind to spiral. Don’t try to figure out why you believe what you believe, or frighten yourself with the imagination of the magnitude of repercussion should you be wrong. Just accept your thoughts for where they are, and remember this moment, because, in a short while, you’re going to look back and remember your answers as the person you used to be.

This is your starting point.

This is your genesis.

There’s no shame in beginning a race.

Until next week, consider these things, and remember how loved you already are.

Sincerely,

Your Faithful Friend
